One day Pavel, a young man wounded in the war, suddenly shows up at the home of a Moscow scientist name Krymov and claims to be his illegitimate son. Krymov denies this, but out of compassion he helps arrange a necessary operation for Pavel. Then certain things begin happening which suggest to Krymov that he may have a psychologically unstable fellow on his hands.

As a result of an accident, the heart of a recently returned from the army Crunch stops. During resuscitation, memories that did not exist before flash into his mind: unfamiliar landscapes of an alien planet, a base of earthlings, a fight with monsters. A meeting on Earth with his former love, Polina from the team of scientists, finally convinces him of the reality of his memories. She, like her fellow soldiers, do not remember anything about the Ninth Planet - their real memory has been erased, and false memories have been implanted instead.
