Professor Griggs, teaching at the college, doesn't get paid a living wage; his next door neighbor, successful shoemaker Olsen, has money and plentiful food, while the Griggses have hardly any. The Ne'er to Return Road

An escaped convict falls exhausted at her door, and she gives him food and drink while the story is told, in flashback, of how he committed his crime. An unfaithful wife, a bar room, a dude and self-defense; these were the elements that made him a convict. The mother learns that it was her boy that he killed. Although the mother helps him to escape, the prison officials capture him.
