The Flying Dutchman

lkka Backman's celebrated rendition of Wagner's opera tells the story of The Flying Dutchman, a skipper who's been banished to sea for all eternity. Staged in a large outdoor courtyard inside Finland's Olavinlinna Castle, the production features German singer Franz Grundheber in the title role and Finnish opera singer Matti Salminen as Daland, a Norwegian sea captain whose daughter Senta (Hildegard Behrens) is the love of the Dutchman's life.

Die Walküre

The gorgeous and evocative Otto Schenk/Günther Schneider-Siemssen production continues with this second opera in Wagner’s Ring cycle. Hildegard Behrens brings deep empathy to Brünnhilde, the favorite daughter of the god Wotan (James Morris) who nevertheless defies him. Morris’s portrayal of Wotan is deservedly legendary, as is Christa Ludwig, as Fricka. Jessye Norman and Gary Lakes are Sieglinde and Siegmund, and Kurt Moll is the threatening Hunding. Hildegard Behrens stars as Elektra, with Deborah Voigt as Chrysothemis, Brigitte Fassbaender as Klytämnestra, Donald McIntyre as Orest, and James King as Aegisth. James Levine conducts.

Wozzeck

1987 recording of Wozzeck by the Vienna State Opera with Claudio Abbado conducting. Based upon Georg Büchner's 1837 play, Alban Berg's Wozzeck details the harsh existence of the title character, a former soldier in the German army who has to struggle mightily to make a living, even as others around him prosper.
