Peg and her father live a simple life in an Irish fishing village. One day Sir Gerald arrives at the village to tell Pat that Peg is heir to estate of her grandfather, who hated Pat. The upshot of the will is that she must go to England for 3 years to learn to be a lady and that Pat can never see her again.

One newspaper, hostile to the politician, headlines the story of the impending duel asking who this Madame X is. Problem is, she is in fact the daughter of the paper's proprietor if only he knew it.

In a make-believe, mittleuropean kingdom, a vivacious but dim country girl sings in a beer garden for her rent money. Eventually he takes in the struggling young singer, and they fall in love, despite possible ruin.
