Paul, a young idealist trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life, takes a job interviewing people for a marketing research firm. He moves in with aspiring pop singer Madeleine. Paul, however, is disillusioned by the growing commercialism in society, while Madeleine just wants to be successful. The story is told in a series of 15 unrelated vignettes.

An officers kadett is dismissed because of his strange behavior. At work he is considered deranged. At home he is dominated by his mother and fiancee. He manages to get a temporary job as a biology teacher, leave home and rent a room. He begins to flirt with a student.

Jan-Olof has an unresolved relationship with his father, and during the days leading up to the funeral, he tries to find out who the father really was. The practical arrangements for a funeral are often of a tragicomic nature.

Carmilla falls for her stepfather and seduces him. When he is killed in a car accident, she decides to take revenge against the driver, but this only leads to a deeper tragedy.
