A focus on the tormented lives of intellectuals who failed to protest recent troubles in their homeland. Jancsó emphasizes highly evocative and ambiguous imagery over dialog or exposition as he – through visually fascinating imagery – depicts the painful, stunted lives of Hungary's intellectuals who have remained silent and ineffectual during various political crises.

The Insult
Szása on his day off mends the old automobile of a young couple and goes shopping with his son. In the shop the saleswoman mistakes him to be a drunken customer of the other day and begins to offend him. Szása, for the sake of his son on the first place, wants to clear the misunderstanding up. At the end he is beaten up and humiliated.

The Great Post Office Robbery
The heroes of this crime-comedy attempt to get hold of money by a funny trick. They start operating the new post-office of the housing estate a week before the official opening, pocketing the revenue themselves. The inhabitants of the estate do not understand the trick, and loads of money pour to the swindlers.
